黒い犬

「おまえ、そんなところで、なにをしている」 　知らぬ間に黒い犬がしのびよって、突然こう言った。 わたしはびっくりして立ち止まった。驚きのあまり、立ちすくんだまま、その犬を見つめていた。 「何かを求めてここに来たのか。ばかめ、ここには何もない。あるように見えるだけだ。こんなところにいつまでも居るものでない。みろ、おまえの足元を」 　わたしは足元をみて、ぞっとした。無数の男女が屍体のように横たわっていた。 　この人たちに、なぜ、いままで気づかなかったのだろう。 「ここですごしておれば心が満たされるだろうと思っていた愚かものたちだ」 　横たわる人びとは、沼に沈んでゆくように、少しづつ地面にめりこんでゆく。わたしは茫然とそれを見ていた。 ――死んでいるのだろうか、とわたしは声に出さずに思った。 「死んではいない」犬が見透かすように言った。「だがこいつらは、このままここで朽ち果ててゆくだけだ。いつまでもここに居るとここから出られなくなる。こうなりたくなかったら、ここから出てゆけ」 　恐怖に駆られたわたしは、後も見ずにその場から走り出した。

Black Dog

"What are you doing there?" Without noticing, a black dog had crept up on me and started speaking. I was surprised and stopped.I stood paralyzed with surprise, and stared at the dog. "Did you come here looking for something? How stupid, there seems to be something, but as a pretense, you should not stay here forever. Look around your feet." I was scared to look around my feet. Innumerable men and women, lie there like corpses. How did I not notice sooner? "They were stupid to think they could be satisfied by staying." They slowly sank into the ground, like sinking into a lake. I felt paralyzed and stared at them.　――Are they dead? I thought without speaking. "They are not dead" The dog spoke, like he had read my mind. "But they may as well have died. They cannot leave as they stayed too long. If you don't want to be the same as them ,you should get out here." I was so scared that I ran away without looking back.
